Going Gluten-Free en français

With all of the dietary restrictions, food allergies, and sensitivities, those who prepare and serve food must be especially cautious to ensure the safest dining experience for their guests. We know that it isn't always easy to find items that one can enjoy on a special diet; however, we believe the joys of French cuisine are too great not to partake!

Therefore, we've compiled a basic list of some (usually) gluten-free options for French dining, so that when you go out, you have a general starting point. As always, make sure you ask your server or the manager to confirm that the items are indeed safe for your consumption.

  • French Macarons - Made from ground almonds, sugars, and egg whites, coupled around a filling are generally gluten-free by nature. With their pretty, festive, and oh so springtime colors, they're an instant favorite for any gathering.
  • Omelettes - Another naturally gluten-free option in most cases. A true omelette will be made with eggs, or course, as well as a variety of meat(s), cheese(s), herbs, and more.
  • Salads - Salads are usually  another great option; however, make sure that you ask your server/restaurant manager/kitchen representative to ensure the dressing is gluten-free as well.
  • Terrines - A hybrid of meatloaf and pate, many terrines are gluten-free by nature, with just meat(s), egg, and spices.
  • Meringues, Mousses, and Creme Brulee - More great French dessert options for those seeking to avoid gluten!
While this list is by no means comprehensive, as there are many more options, it just goes to show that enjoying French cuisine and remaining gluten-free isn't impossible after all. By asking and working with the staff at your favorite French restaurant, you can ensure a wonderful dining experience and accommodate your gluten-free needs.

Bon appetit sans gluten!

Napoleons - Ooh la la!

There are but a handful of things one thinks of when French cuisine is discussed. Generally topping the list and at the forefront of consciousness are French desserts. Around here, we're no stranger to the delicacies that involve sugar, cream, and a little French culinary know-how. As such, we thought we'd share one of our favorites, the Napoleon.

A true pastry masterpiece, the Napoleon is a French legend in both name and substance. Rich layers of velvety cream enrobed in perfectly airy puff pastry and topped with a delicately patterned icing, what's not to love?!

"An army marches on its stomach." ~ Napoleon Bonaparte

A bit on the tedious side to make, but easy enough to find at most French bakeries, we suggest that the next time the opportunity presents itself, you run, don't walk to the nearest little bakery and grab yourself a Napoleon and a cup of coffee. Just a bit of sunshine in such a pretty little treat, we're almost certain you'll love them as much as we do.

Tried Napoleon's before? Tell us what you think of them in the comments below.

Non-Traditional Grillables

Last week, we discussed the perfect wine varieties for bringing along to that backyard barbecue or grill-out. This week, all this talk about grilling had us thinking. Yes, thinking that we were hungry, but also that there are so many other options for the grill besides just meat.

We also, as you probably know, LOVE lists! So, in no particular order, we compiled a list of our favorite non-meat foods that are fabulous when prepared on the grill.

  1. Pineapple - Fresh pineapple is a fantastic summer treat on it's own, but throw it on the grill to top that pulled pork sandwich or grilled fish filet, and you've taken dinner to a whole new level.
  2. Vegetables - Onions, Brussels Sprouts, Peppers, and more, we haven't yet met a vegetable that wasn't impressive once brunched with a little olive oil, seasoned, and grilled to perfection.
  3. Potatoes - The grill is a fantastic way to bake your potatoes. Why bother heating your house up with that oven, when you can cook them alongside your other courses on the grill! Wrap in foil and leave enough time for the grill to work it's magic and you're good to go.
  4. Corn on the Cob - Not technically a vegetable, so it gets its own shout out. Simply peel back the husks, soak in cold water for 15 minutes, and then apply olive oil and salt and pepper. Pull husks back over the corn and tie with cooking string. Then, pop those babies on the grill and voila! You'll never want corn any other way. (Reminiscent of the fabulous corn they sell at the State Fair).
  5. Bread - Whether take-and-bake rolls or a fresh baguette, the grill is the perfect vehicle for warming your dinner bread. Plus, that slightly smoky taste is most excellent. Always watch bread carefully and use the top rack if you have one. Tinfoil could also be used just in case, so your bread is nice and smoky, not charred and crusty.
  6. Pizza - A new favorite, pizza on the grill is great go-to novelty fare for a small dinner party. Simply top dough with your favorite pizza sauce, toppings, and cheese and grill to desired doneness. For even more fun, allow guests to make their own pizzas.
  7. Mushrooms - Portabella, Cremini, it's all good. Whether skewered in a shishkabob or holding their own over the flames, grilled mushrooms are positively delectable. Plus, it can be a more healthful option than simply sauteing, because it requires less oil/butter.
Did we miss anything? If so, feel free to add your own favorite non-traditional grillable in the comments section below. Happy grilling!
